What's best... when... and how.
Plant, divide, prune, fertilize, prevent disease, put a stop to
nasty pests and many more recommendations.
September,though still warm, marks the
beginning of fall in Southern California. Now is the time to get
your hands back in the soil and start preparing for October
planting. October is the best month of the year to plant in San
Diego. Consider what cool-season crops you'll put in the vegetable
garden and what winter-blooming flowers you'll use to replace your
fading summer flowers. Don't let the word "Fall" fool you, San Diego
will remain hot through the month and your permanent trees, vines
and shrubs will reward you if you give them a very deep watering
this month!
The
most important thing you can do for your lawn and garden now is to
pay attention to what needs water and when. By watering wisely your
plants and trees will benefit and you will conserve water. Be sure
to water less frequently and more deeply. With the heat, water as
early in the day as possible. You can minimize the amount of water
you use by ensuring that you have a thick bed of mulch which will
also keep your plants cool.
I recently came upon
a hot tip I wanted to share. If you have problems with ants getting
into your hummingbird feeder, thickly place some petroleum jelly
around the hook. Ants won't go through it and your feeder will be
able to provide the ambience you desire and the nutrition
hummingbirds are looking for!
